From Classic to Country Rustic...

We wanted a new look for our dining set. We picked up this dining set for $75 on Craigslist and picked up a hutch for the same price. We ended up keeping the legs the same color and redoing the top of the table.

I stripped the table using a gel type stripper. This worked well on the top, but not the edges. I used 220 grit sand paper to smooth it out with a final sanding of 320 (this was a little overkill). I could have taken it down a lot quicker by using a rougher sand paper- but I wanted to take my time.

Next- I used a waterbase prestain since the wood was maple (a tighter grain), in order to help it take the stain more evenly. I let that dry as per the instructions and then gave the top two coats of a custom tinted dark espresso (also waterbase). After that I gave it four coats of a satin polycrylic finish by Minwax- sanding out imperfections with 320 grit. It turned out fantastic and durable.

We painted the chair tops to match the white that was already existing on them. We also distressed them and then painted them withRust-Oleum's ivory distressed kit for the chair tops, as well as the hutch. The color was a little too bright so we gave them a light spray (dusting) of Rust-Oleum's Antique Ivory Spray Paint. We sealed them with Rust-Oleums clear gloss finish for durability.

I matched the hutch to this same espresso colored top and satin finish. For the chair tops and the hutch I sanded them a little bit first to make sure the paint would adhere correctly to them.
